The fans in the sold-out Wiener Stadthalle were treated to a dominant Jack Draper for long stretches of the match. The Brit immediately took the break for 2-1 and served out the first set 6-4.

In the second set, everything looked like a straightforward success. Draper led 4:0 before the thread suddenly broke and Khachanov was even able to take a 5-4 lead. “I know Karen is a fighter and one of the best players in the world. I then kept my emotions under control and luckily it went well for me at the end,” explained the 22-year-old.

Draper in love with Vienna

At 5-5, Draper managed the ultimately decisive break to make it 6-5, but then struggled to serve out the match. Khachanov didn't let up and earned two more break points, but couldn't capitalize on them. Draper finally converted his first match point after 1:35 hours. “It's been an incredible week for me,” said Draper afterwards. “I love Vienna and I'm glad that my hard work has now paid off.” He also thanked the crowd: “Thank you for supporting me and the other players so much all week.” At the same time, he expressed his love for Vienna and the tournament: “This was my first time in Vienna, I hope I can come here many more times. Herwig (Straka, Tournament Director) and his team have put together an incredible event. It's sold out every day and yet it feels so familiar.”

Khachanov praises Draper and Muster

The defeated final opponent Khachanov took the defeat in his stride and inspired the audience with his acceptance speech: “Jack deserves this. He made the breakthrough this year and I'm already looking forward to a rematch. My last few weeks have been good, not so much before that. Everything can change so quickly in life, you just have to keep going, stay positive and fight. Just like Thomas Muster, who is also here on court.” Khachanov enchanted the audience and the tournament ambassador present with his last entry. “Thomas,” Khachanov continued, ”you were so incredible back then. So full of energy.” Finally, his declaration of love for Vienna: “It's always wonderful to come to this city. Thank you for your support!”
